Automotive Memoirs…..from an expert former new car dealership flat rate Mechanic:

One day long ago in the 1990s our master mechanic (before he was ours’) was working as one of the leading flat rate mechanics at a new car dealership in the local area. If this dealership had a difficult job —- Doug could not only do it in record time —- he could do it perfect, save the customer money while he did it perfect (although the service manager didn’t necessarily like this) by diagnosing it properly and accurately, and he was fair and honest and had extensive expertise and professionalism. Doug worked at this dealership for many years and he was undoubtedly ‘one of their best'. The problem is that new car dealerships DON’T LIKE THE CUSTOMERS TO TALK DIRECTLY TO THEIR MECHANICS AND, IN THIS CASE, DOUG.

To understand more it is important to give an inner look at the way the new car dealership serves it’s service customers or more importantly --- how we don't (this gets at the heart of 'why we are different'). The way the new car dealerships work in terms of service is like this: A service writer manager manages a service writer who advises service to the customers calling in, arranges to have cars looked at / diagnosed, etc. These individuals work on salary but they receive bonuses in many cases as well pertaining to how much service $$$ they bring in. It’s all incentivized. At this new car dealership —— a service writer and service manager are the liaison (the people in-between) to the mechanics working on the vehicles in the actual shop area. And so customers sit in the waiting area and go to the service desk (or call in), the service writer talks to them, sells the work and takes in the work and opens a work order supervised by the service manager and then the ticket is taken to the mechanic in the shop who is paid a flat rate (more experienced mechanics are paid flat rate because its more advantageous for them if they work fast and efficiently) or, in the cases of more inexperienced mechanics an hourly rate. In a perfect world where corporate policy, greed, incentivized bonus plans for personnel and other obstacles don't exist or get in the way this might be a model which could actually work--- but, it doesn't -- at least we feel it doesn't in our opinion based on many years of experience. And, more importantly, these complications not only lay the foundation for HUGE corporate service centers --- in our opinion, they are contradictory to the integrity of our craft and our trade which is meant to help people and not hurt them. Stealing one penny from your customers merely brands one as a charleton and not a true professional with integrity, among other things.

Back to our story and our in-depth look at the corporate service model we know: the corporate dealership will typically bill the customers for the hourly ‘book job rate’ regardless of how the dealership pays their mechanics or how fast the flat rate mechanic works (e.g., if the flat rate mechanic accomplishes a 10 hour book rate in 1 hour — something Doug did regularly) the customer is still charged the 10 hours regardless…..yes, it’s crazy…and it happens every day - again, new car dealerships are huge and impressive because OF THIS REASON)… However, this service format, while it can be advantageous to the dealership service dept., is why most flat rate mechanics are at risk and also victims of this racket. However, in the course of Doug’s tenure…..yet more problems surfaced when Doug would accurately, precisely, and quickly locate problems on customers’ vehicles - sometimes latent material malfunctions the customers didn’t know about - which would eliminate the need for more costly repairs. This was frowned upon. However, bearing in mind....unlike at Go Motors LLC mechanics like Doug were not the ones who spoke to the customers — the service writers were who are supervised by the service manager. That said, a lot can get lost in translation, bills can climb in the process, and the mechanic’s rendition of events might never be heard. You can imagine the corruption that goes on ….. and, rest assured, it does. Bear in mind…new car dealerships are HUGE and impressive not because of the new cars they sell —- they are powerful and rich because of the excessive charging they do to customers in the service department.

The beginning of the end: Doug was working on a vehicle as he always did on one particular day at the new car dealership and the service writer manager came out to tell him that he was being ‘laid off’ and that things were ‘tight’ unfortunately. Doug felt bad…..but he understood. Two days later while moving out his tool boxes Doug found that the service writer manager’s nephew, just 19 years old and newly graduated from vocational high school, was now working in Doug’s station —- apparently, with no pay cut either. Ahhhh…so the service manager found a replacement who was more ‘obedient’ then Doug — one who didn’t argue about the customer’s best interests needlessly. That was a pivotal moment for Doug in his career and one might argue: the Go Motors LLC light bulb lit up right then and there.

Yep, that is the moment when a light-bulb went on for our master mechanic Doug. Now, years later —- Doug is our organizer, owner, and leader and the customers love Doug. Sometimes…we at the front desk take the calls but Doug has made it clear: he is there to talk to his customers and cares that they are not overcharged. He is honest, decent, and he works very hard. We all respect him highly because of this as do his customers. His customers benefit from his experience vastly. A story like this defines who we are but also who we are not. We NEVER let our personal gain take priority over our customer’s best interests and we stay involved, care, and work hard. That story will NEVER happen at our shop. We are picky about our mechanics, we care about our customers and their best interests, and we do excellent work at a fair and honest price. It’s a good story. We hope it helps you make good decisions when you stand in the automotive repair crossroads — a place EVERYONE winds up in sooner or later.
